Ditch the Desk: Salaried Staff Are Holding Your Business Back

Business ownership and management has had a tough go of it the last few years. Getting everyone setup with a home office, managing scheduled calls, and trying to maintain a resemblance of the office place we once knew. Has it been effective? In our opinion, no. But, opportunity is typically found at a crossroads.

We’ve stated before that the rise of the Fractional Key Role is a signal to the market at large. Some jobs just don’t require a dedicated staff member any longer and IT professionals are being laid off in huge waves across multiple industries. The reason? There are tools that do the majority of the work and it is simply more cost effective than what it took to maintain your IT infrastructure even 2 or 3 years ago. That’s not even mentioning what AI has already done to disrupt the market.

So with all of these new tools and efficiencies available, what are employees bringing to the table? Quite frankly, a lot of demands. We’ve all heard the same comments, “I’ve been working remote since 2020. If my employer demands I return to the office, I’ll quit.” We think employers are sick of it.

For instance, a CNBC Workforce Wire articled entitled “The market for six-figure salary hybrid jobs has crashed” stated:

Leaders at many large companies, including Boeing and UPS, have made it clear they want people back in the office. This is to make sure that they're maximizing the value of employees, particularly in challenging economic circumstances. However, employees of all stripes — particularly highly paid workers, as research notes — now know what it feels like to manage their personal and professional lives with hybrid flexibility, and they're not willing to give it up.” – Rachel Curry, CNBC

So, if you are reading this as a business owner or a manager of a team, what exactly is the difference between a salaried employee and a vendor? Our answer is simple. Money.

The see-saw of employer and employee relationships are being stretched to a breaking point, it’s self evident. But, when industry titans such as Boeing and UPS have stated they need their staff back in the office, it means the work from home model has produced a less efficient and less profitable bottom line. Don’t take it from us, they’re only large, publicly traded companies with legal fiduciary responsibility to maintain profit for their shareholders. Not too much to worry about, right?

A company’s largest overhead cost is always staff. Our solution is quite simple, if the tug of war to maintain the cushy work-from-home and work-life balance is going to cause less profitability, don’t hire salaried employees. If you pay people to work from home, then you are unnecessarily engaged in a vendor relationship with no benefits. It’s our philosophy that as an independent contractor, we’ll work just as hard or exceed your staff given the opportunity. No W-2, payroll tax, 401k match, healthcare, or PTO? Again, say it with us… Fractional Key Roles.

Even Forbes recently posted an article about this called “Fortune 500 companies are eliminating chief marketing officer roles as the position loses C-suite clout”. We’re not reading tea leaves here, we saw the writing on the wall awhile ago. This is why ALTAMIT – Marketing, Information, and Technology Services was founded.
