Click-Through Rates. What Should I Expect?

Online advertising is one of the most measurable marketing methods. Every interaction, click, and view can be tracked and compiled to provide you with an advertising campaign that’s ultra effective. Click-Through Rates (CTR) specifically measure the amount of link clicks you've received on your ad compared to how many impressions your ad received. It is an important metric used by online advertisers to understand how ads drive traffic to websites and other destinations. Let's explore the most popular platforms in this article and see how their CTRs stack up against each other.

Search Engine Marketing Platforms:

Google Ads:

Google Ads is one of the most popular advertising platforms on the internet. Because of that, its CTR is typically higher than other platforms. For instance, Search Network Ads, which are displayed directly on the Google search engine results page, have an average CTR of 3.17% across all industries. Meanwhile, Display Network Ads, which appear on various websites that are part of the Google Display Network (including more than 2 million websites, videos, and apps), have an average CTR of 0.46% across all industries.

Per the Marin Software blog, Search Ads vs. Display Ads:

The main difference between display and search ads is that search ads are considered ‘pull’ advertising while display ads are considered ‘push’ advertising. So, search ads only appear to consumers actively searching for the required product or service. In contrast, display ads are considered paid placement and can appear anywhere on the web that a user may be navigating.

Bing Ads:

Bing Ads is a search engine marketing platform that operates similarly to Google Ads. Bing Ads' average CTR is 2.83%, which is slightly lower than Google Ads. However, the Cost Per Click (CPC) is typically lower on Bing Ads, which can make it a more cost-effective advertising option.

Per WordStream’s article, Bing Ads Benchmarks for YOUR Industry:

The average cost per click on Bing across all industries is $1.54. Bing’s average CPC is 33% lower than what we see on Google Ads. The few advertisers that are on Bing take advantage of a much less competitive ad auction, which helps keep CPCs low in most industries. Bing also still serves ads in the right hand rail of the SERP, unlike Google, which gives it more room to show ads from advertisers with lower bids.

Social Media Advertising Platforms:

Facebook Ads:

Facebook Ads is a social media advertising platform that offers a variety of ad formats, including images, videos, and carousels. In the recent report Social Advertising Benchmarks for 2023, Brafton.com states: “On Facebook, the average CTR across all industries is 0.90%.” However, the CTR can vary widely depending on the industry and the ad format. Video ads tend to have a higher CTR than image ads. Additionally, ads that are targeted towards a specific audience can also have a higher CTR.

Instagram Ads:

Instagram Ads is a social media advertising platform that is owned by Facebook. It offers a variety of ad formats, including images, videos, carousels, and story ads. The top-end CTR average for Instagram Ads is 0.71%. Similar to Facebook Ads, the CTR can vary widely depending on the ad format and the industry. The Brafton.com report also notes: “In general, Instagram feed ads see CTRs between 0.22% and 0.88%, whereas Stories ads experience a narrower CTR range of 0.33% to 0.54%.”

Twitter Ads:

Twitter Ads is a social media advertising platform that allows advertisers to promote their tweets, accounts, and trends. The Brafton.com reports the average CTR for Twitter Ads as “0.86%.” However, the CTR can vary depending on the ad format and the industry.

Professional Networking Platform:

LinkedIn Ads:

LinkedIn Ads is a professional networking platform that allows advertisers to target specific audiences based on job title, company size, and industry. Per the Brafton.com report: “Overall, the CTR for LinkedIn ads across industries [is] 0.52%.” However, LinkedIn Ads' CTR can be higher for B2B companies that are targeting specific professionals.

According to the LinkedIn report, LinkedIn Ad Benchmarks:

There are three main types of ad content on LinkedIn: Sponsored Content, Text & Dynamic Ads, and Sponsored Messaging. Each format has different benchmarks for click-through-rate, cost-per-click, and conversion rate.
— LinkedIn

Sponsored Content is one of the most popular LinkedIn ad styles. These ads display directly on your audience’s news feed in a variety of ad formats, including images, videos, carousels, and events. Sponsored Content produces an average CTR of 0.44% and typical CPC of $8 to $11.

Text & Dynamic Ads are similarly styled advertising options for desktop users only. Text Ads are right-rail banner advertisements. They are small in size and produce a lower average CTR of only 0.025%. Dynamic Ads are approximately three times larger than Text Ads. This larger sized ad yields a higher attraction rate and increased average CTR of 0.08%.

Sponsored Messaging are targeted ads sent directly to specific user’s LinkedIn inbox. Sponsored Messages see an average open rate of approximately 55%. Additionally, average CTRs are 3.2%.

Overall, the CTRs for ads on Google, Bing, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn can vary widely depending on the industry, ad format, and targeting options. It's important for advertisers to monitor their CTRs and adjust their campaigns accordingly to ensure they are getting the most out of their advertising budget.
